Nicky Lopez gives back with inaugural Chicago White Sox charity softball tournament
When former Naperville Central baseball star Nicky Lopez was traded by the Atlanta Braves to his hometown Chicago White Sox this offseason, the Sox not only received a versatile infielder on the diamond, but a local standout eager to give back to the community. Lopez, who was inducted in the Naperville Central Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this year, hosted his first 16-inch charity softball tournament, featuring sixteen teams at Mount Greenwood Park in Chicago.
Michigan gymnast reaches new heights by making USA Olympic team
Michigan’s Paul Juda was on the fringe entering the United States men’s gymnastics Olympic trials June 27 and 29 in Minneapolis. The Deerfield, Illinois native picked a good time to have the meet of his life. He accomplished what he set out to do during the two-day event with zero falls and hitting all his routines. Juda finished fourth in the all-round and top-five in four events: floor (second), pommel horse (third), vault (fourth), and high bar (fifth). His Olympic dream was now left in the hands of the selection committee, who used an algorithm based on scores from the U.S. Championships and Olympic trials to determine the five members and two alternates who will represent the U.S. in Paris July 26-Aug. 11.

Knight Monsters sign Dodero, Robbins
STATELINE, Nev. – The Tahoe Knight Monsters announced that the team has agreed to terms with forwards Chris Dodero and Adam Robbins for the 2024-25 season. Dodero, 28, joins the Knight Monsters after playing the past two seasons overseas in Austria and Germany. Last season, Dodero posted 22 points (10g-12a) in 28 games with the Rosenheim Star Bulls (DEL-2), while also logging two assists in eight games with Austria’s Graz HC. He played the 2022-23 season in Austria as well with Ljubijana Olimpija HK, recording 30 points (10g-20a) in 39 contests. Prior to his professional career, the Bloomingdale, Illinois resident also played five collegiate seasons at American International College totaling 71 points (26g-45a) in 134 games.

More bike racks at OPRF
It has come to my attention that there is an utmost lack of student bike stands surrounding the high school. As a student at OPRF, I faced the issue of limited bike spots often and in most cases I had to squeeze in. With the addition of more bike racks near all entrances, students like me will be able to have enough space to lock our bikes in the morning without having to press in.

The men’s 1500 free went to Aquajets Swim Team 17-year-old Jiarui Xue, who finished in 15:57.10. Xue, a Princeton recruit, has been quite a bit faster, holding a personal best of 15:38.14, which he swam at the NCSA Championships in March. Ozaukee Aquatics 14-year-old Grant Freeze had a fantastic swim for 4th in the mile, clocking a 16:13.24, which marks a new personal best by nearly 24 seconds.
Josie Muffley signs with AU Pro Softball for 2024 Championship season
Josie Muffley is set to return to Rosemont, Illinois this summer with Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball to compete in the 2024 Championship season. Muffley made her professional debut with the league last year after finishing her collegiate career at Florida State. She achieved a 27th-place finish on the leaderboard and was one of two middle infielders named to the AU Pro Softball All-Defensive Team. Muffley started in all 15 games and fashioned seven hits in 35 at-bats including three doubles. She had her best day at the plate on Aug. 5 when she recorded her first multi-hit game as a pro, going 3-for-4 in Team Zerkle’s win.

Izzy Scane Enters Rookie Season with Connections New and Old
Izzy Scane has yet to make her Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse debut, but she comes into her rookie season with some interesting connections. Scane, a six-year star at Northwestern University, finished her college career in the national championship game as the all-time Division I leader in goals scored with 376. She surpassed the previous record of 358, set by Charlotte North of Boston College.
