Nebraska Supreme Court upholds law restricting both medical care for transgender youth and abortion
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska law that combined abortion restrictions with another measure to limit gender-affirming health care for minors does not violate a state constitutional amendment requiring bills to stick to a single subject, a majority of the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled Friday. The state’s high court acknowledged in its ruling that abortion and gender-affirming care “are distinct types of medical care,” but found the law does not violate Nebraska’s single-subject rule because both abortion and transgender health fall under the subject of medical care. The majority relied, in part, on a passage from an 1895 ruling to find the state constitution offers wide latitude on what composes a single subject. “Ultimately, ‘if a bill has but one general object, no matter how broad that object may be, and contains no matter not germane thereto, and the title fairly expresses the subject of the bill, it does not violate’” the state constitution’s single-subject rule, Chief Justice Mike Heavican wrote for the court.
Nebraska’s Ron Brown to become on-field assistant coach
The Nebraska Cornhuskers announced another change to their coaching staff on Wednesday afternoon. Director of Player Support and Outreach Ron Brown will now coach fullbacks and returners. A recent change to NCAA rules no longer limits the number of coaches who can be employed in an on-field role. Previously, only the head coach and ten assistants were allowed to interact with student-athletes in ‘technical or tactical instruction.’ “The Division I Council on Tuesday approved a rule change… to permit any staff member to provide technical and tactical instruction to student-athletes… during practice and competition.” Brown has a long association with Nebraska football, having coached for the Huskers for 24 years. He served as an assistant from 1987-2003 and again from 2008-14. The Husker coach has coached wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs during his time at Nebraska. He will transition away from his role as Nebraska’s director of player support and outreach into his new on-field role. New Illinois Law Requires Weather Radios In Certain Homes
It's been a rough tornado season and a new Illinois law is taking aim at that. We can all agree it's been a messy summer. In the Chicago area alone last week, there were 33 tornadoes, compared to their usual 5 or 6 per year. With the derecho that moved through last week, 5 tornadoes rolled through the QCA. In Iowa, May was ridiculous. We average 11 tornadoes in May. But this year, we had over 80 tornadoes in May alone.
Examine worries about Iowa's ag economy; check RAGBRAI coverage; wish us happy birthday!
Twenty-two percent of Iowa's economy — $53.1 billion and 385,000 jobs — is tied to agriculture, from crop and livestock production to manufacturing, according to a new report commissioned by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers. Those statistics underscore how foundational agribusiness is to Iowa's economy, which is why agricultural economists are watching with concern as the count of layoffs climbs at Iowa's ag-related manufacturers and food processors, according to a story published earlier this week from...
