    EHS Boys finish strong at states

    The Elkin High School men’s track team finished in 3rd place overall at the Northwest 1A Conference Championship on May 2. All top 4 finishers advanced to the regional meet on May 11. Five of the Buckin’ Elks qualified and competed at the 1A NCHSAA state meet on May 20 at NC A&T University setting a new EHS school record in the 4x400 relay.

    In the Northwest 1A Conference meet, the relay team of Luke Altemueller, Westin Byerly, Mason Day and Omar Hurtado took the first place finish, earning each member of the team All-Conference honors. Lucas Keller placed first in the 100-meter dash, setting a new conference meet record and Jericho Edwards finished second in the same event, each earning All-Conference honors. Both Keller and Edwards also competed in the 400-meter event, again with Keller setting a new conference record and grabbing first place while Edwards finished third. In the 1600-meter event, Mason Day nabbed the top spot and Edwards finished in first place in the 200-meter dash. The relay team of Westin Byerly, Mason Day, Jericho Edwards and Lucas Keller took first place in the 4x400 relay.

    At the Midwest regional meet on May 11, the team had a very strong performance earning runner-up honors. Five of the Elkin athletes qualified to move on to the state championship meet. Djimon Brown placed second overall in the shot put event. Jericho Edwards finished in third place in the 100-meter dash. In the 400-meter dash, Keller placed third, setting a new EHS record of 50.24 and Edwards finished in 4th place. Mason Day won the 800-meter event and Edwards placed fourth in the 200-meter dash. Byerly, Day, Edwards and Keller took first in the 4x400 meter relay event, setting a new EHS and a new Midwest Regional record.

    At the state championship meet on May 20, Djimon Brown finished in 12th place overall in shot put. Jericho Edwards took 3rd place in the 100-meter dash. In the 400-meter dash, Lucas Keller finished in 7th place overall while Edwards came in just behind his teammate to take the 8th place overall. Mason Day finished in third place in the 800-meter run. Westin Byerly, Day, Edwards and Keller finished in 4th place overall in the 4x400 relay, setting a new EHS record of 3:29.40.
