What happens when an architect and an interior designer decide to put a vacation rental on a remote corner of their working cattle farm? An award-winning off-grid cabin called The Hut, of course.

Greg Dutton of Midland Architecture designed the 600-square foot space with a massive picture window looking out on the tree-filled lot. The exterior is completely covered in cedar shingle siding, which allows it to blend seamlessly into the surrounding land.

The interior is simple and open-concept, with the living room separated from the bedroom by the wood-burning stove. The interior design is courtesy of Liz Dutton and looks like it's straight out of a modern-day Ralph Lauren catalog. The cabin has a Scandinavian feel with light woods, an airy vibe, and streamlined earth-toned furnishings.

The black accents on the wood stove, cabinetry, and bathroom anchor the space and create an interesting tension with the lighter colors.

If the beautiful valley views aren't relaxing enough, The Hut feels like a complete getaway from the modern world since it was built off-grid. There are solar panels nearby creating energy and the running water is collected rainwater. In fact, it's so far off the grid that guests are asked to bring their own water for drinking and cooking.

The space was designed for easy relaxation with a picnic table and fire pit outside and a selection of board games available. While there is WiFi, there's no television. However, there is a projector and screen available so you can still enjoy a movie night.

The Belmont County cabin's simple elegance snared it the 2019 AIA Ohio Honor Award for Architecture. Past guests seem to agree with the assessment, with one calling it: "a perfectly secluded, well-thought-out space." Another appreciated the abundance of wildlife in the area.

Sounds idyllic, but the only challenge is the space books up quickly, so you may want to look at it now for your Fall getaway.
