Back to School Bash
On Friday, August 23, Connecting Communities in Action will hold its Annual Back to School Bash on the front lawn at 25 Jefferson Street in Salamanca, New York from 2:00-4:00pm. This event is free and open to all area children. Your kids will enjoy an afternoon of carnival-type activities sponsored by each of the CCA departments: games, prizes and crafts, popcorn, hotdogs and beverages, school supplies, personal hygiene products and free back to school haircuts by Tim Holland. There will be plenty of activities for the kids to play and win prizes to celebrate the end of summer. There will also be face painting and balloon shapes for the kids to express their creative sides! Bonus: CCA’s Back to School Bash will feature backpack and school supply giveaways.

3rd Annual Veterans Wellness Fair Held in Celoron
The 3rd annual Veterans Wellness Fair hosted a subcommittee of the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Chautauqua County is being called a "resounding success." The event held recently at the Celoron American Legion brought together veterans for a day dedicated to health, wellness, and community engagement. With Cindy Reidy, Project Coordinator of the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Program helping to steer the Suicide Prevention Veteran Subcommittee and Carri Raynor serving as the Director of the Suicide Prevention Alliance, the fair featured 35 local and regional services and agencies.

Mary Ellen Megerle Skidmore of Southern Pines formerly of Jamestown NY passed away peacefully on August 3. 2024. Mary Ellen was born on November 5, 1925 in Philadelphia Pa. She attended Cheltenham High School and went on to graduate from William & Mary College. Mary Ellen married Stephen Skidmore in 1950. They were married for 66 years.
Public asked to help install Mayville playground equipment
MAYVILLE – Some new playground equipment is coming to the village this fall and the community is asked to help install it. During this week’s Village Board meeting, it was announced that the village is adding new pieces and making improvements to some of the equipment at Lakeside Park. They’re also getting a new playground at Pearl Gravit Memorial Park, and installing some musical playground equipment to the Village Green in the downtown area.

City police probing Wednesday shooting
The Dunkirk Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred in the city on at about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday. Officers were alerted to the incident on the 300 block of Washington Avenue and learned that one person was struck by gunfire. The injury at this time does not appear life-threatening. The victim was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital by a private vehicle and later transferred to ECMC in Buffalo. Police say the incident was targeted at people who know each other.

The City of Dunkirk Men’s Fastpitch League concluded Monday after Lackawanna beat G&E Tents 10-0 and 9-1 in the championship series. Lackawanna finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record. Additional teams in the league were: Lakeside Club, Monnies and Can Kings. The league is looking to grow for next season in preparation for the 50th annual First Ward Falcon Club Fastpitch Tournament to be held July 18-20, 2025.
