Newton mill and overlay projects to start July 10
NEWTON, Kan. — The City of Newton's annual mill and overlay will begin this week with Medical Center Drive. The contractor, Pearson Construction, will begin milling off asphalt on Wednesday, July 10. City crews will do base pavement patching the following day, and then Pearson will begin the asphalt overlay. Pearson plans to work one lane at a time. They will use a flagging crew to stop traffic and flag drivers around the construction as needed.

The year-old male pit bull mix joined Emi Griess from Helping Hands Humane Society in a visit to Eye on NE Kansas. Emi said Truman came to the shelter as a stray, so they don’t know anything about his background. However, he has a gentle personality and enjoys his canine friends.
Baxter Springs enhances annual Light Up the Sky celebration with new attractions
BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Baxter Springs is looking to take their annual Light Up the Sky celebration to another level. The city’s public works crew lead the fundraising and organizing efforts, getting 20 sponsors to donate to help put the celebration on. Previously the event took place on 19th St, but this year it’s returning to Kiwanis Park.

Foundation poured for Dollar Tree in east Emporia
It isn’t paving paradise to put up a parking lot, but construction in northeast Emporia is replacing the Family Fun Center with a Dollar Tree. With the foundation recently poured, Emporia city officials confirmed basic plans for a roughly 9,800 square-foot building at 920 East 12th, between Old Rum’s Liquor and Goodcents. A construction timetable is pending.
One hospitalized following two-vehicle collision south of Emporia Friday
An Emporia woman was hospitalized after a two-vehicle collision south of Emporia Friday afternoon. The accident was reported at 4:45 pm at the intersection of Kansas Highway 99 and Road 150, two miles south of Emporia. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2011 Cadillac Escalade, driven by 81-year-old Charles Jeanneret of Olpe, was traveling northbound on K99 behind a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse driven by 24-year-old Neida Rosales of Emporia, when the Traverse slowed to make a turn onto Road 150.
Point Forward tax filings raise more questions about the Pittsburg non-profit
New questions are being raised about Point Forward, a Pittsburg, Kansas, non-profit that is remodeling the former Washington School into a child care center. Point Forward was awarded more than $700,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding in 2023, but in April, it became clear that it could not receive the $705,000 as it was not a licensed childcare provider.
