Pritzker signs bill creating new Department of Early Childhood
SPRINGFIELD – Gov. JB Pritzker signed legislation Tuesday creating a new cabinet-level state agency dedicated to early childhood education and development. The new Department of Early Childhood, which will become operational in July 2026, will take over programs currently housed across three state agencies, including funding for preschool programs, child care centers and the licensing of day care centers.

One person was injured as a result of a shooting incident in Galesburg. According to a press release, on July 6 at approximately 11:48 p.m., the Galesburg Police Department responded to a report of a shooting on S. Cherry St. Upon arrival, officers found a victim of a gunshot wound in the street. Officers provided lifesaving treatment until medical personnel could arrive. A gas leak in Galesburg has closed the area of Summer and Matthews Streets. Buildings within a one-block area will be evacuated out of an abundance of caution.
