The New York State Department of Transportation recently began construction on a $9.9 million project to rehabilitate three Erie County bridges that collectively serve more than 25,000 vehicles daily.

“The rehabilitation of these three bridges in Erie County will help us create a more resilient transportation network that better serves residents and visitors to Western New York and will further sustain the tremendous momentum of investment we are already seeing throughout the Buffalo area,” Marie Therese Dominguez, state department of transportation commissioner, said.

Two bridges, in Buffalo, carry Fillmore Avenue and Grider Street over State Route 33. The third bridge carries State Route 5 over Eighteen Mile Creek in the town of Evans.

The Fillmore Avenue bridge was built in 1965. It will be closed in spring 2025 with the project expected to finish by the end of the year.

The Grider Street bridge was build in 1968. Work began on Monday, and the bridge will re-open to traffic in mid-November.

Both bridges will have their bridge decks and joints replaced, bridge piers will be rehabilitated, and there will be steel repairs and rail upgrades.

The State Route 5 bridge was built in 1931. It will have bridge joints replaced, beginning this summer.
