Pets Of The Week: Meet Sugar And Ryder
Sugar lives up to her sweet name: her ear-to-ear smiles, rear-to-ear full body wags, and charming, silly, sunshine-y personality are irresistible. Española Humane welcomed this pocket-sized 4-lb., 1-year-old shepherd-mix when she was evacuated from the Blue 2 Fire in Ruidoso, and with her trainability, endearing sweetness, and absolute love for other dogs, Española Humane felt she was a perfect candidate for its Paws in the Pen prison training program. After 8 weeks of 24/7 training with her two inmate handlers, Sugar knows her stuff, but she’s also a bit of the class clown, offering the cute comic relief everyone can use on a daily basis. She goes home potty, leash and crate trained with a whole list of cues and basic behaviors. To ensure a successful adoption, Española Humane is providing four free training sessions to adopters (so owners can learn what their dog knows) and an invitation to weekly discounted drop-in classes. Sugar also goes home with a biothane leash and collar, 6 months of heartworm prevention, and she’s spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Apply for Sugar at espanolahumane.org and schedule a meet and greet appointment. Courtesy photo.
Los Alamos Sees Itself In ‘Paradise Paradox’
A scene from the screening of ‘Paradise Paradox’ June 24 at SALA Event Center. Photo by Kirsten Laskey/ladailypost.com. Small, rural towns can be deceiving. Quaint town centers and close-knit communities seem appealing and add to that some kind of tourist destination like a ski resort and small towns appear as havens from all the turmoil of big cities. The trouble is, a safe haven that is totally immune from troubles, doesn’t exist; so, what happens when significant issues such as depression and suicide find their way into these small towns? More importantly, what is the best way to address these issues?
Theophan: The Art Of Raku
A few weeks ago, for a friend’s birthday, we hosted a raku party and cook-out. It was pouring rain which dampened the cook-out a bit, but also mitigated the effects of the heat during the raku firings. “Raku” is a variation of a Japanese ceramic firing technique that consists...

We first heard public concerns that conducting aquatic center maintenance from September to April could negatively impact swim teams and other users. While contractor availability will play a role in scheduling, the PRB is committed to working with the Community Services Department (CSD) to minimize disruptions. Public comments like these are invaluable, and we encourage community input at the start of all our meetings to better serve public interests.
