EVANSVILLE — The Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Dubois County law enforcement are investigating the apparent drowning death of an Evansville teenager.

In a news release published Monday morning, the IDNR said officers were dispatched to Patoka Lake at 1:43 p.m. Sunday "for a person going underwater and not resurfacing."

IDNR divers later arrived at the scene and, according to the agency, recovered the body of 19-year-old Edgar Osbaldo Garcia Herrera, of Evansville, at approximately 4:31 p.m.

Officer Ryan McIntyre of the IDNR told the Courier & Press that Herrera's death was still under investigation. McIntyre said Herrera appeared to have been swimming without a life jacket prior to his death and that turbulent water could have been a factor in the drowning.

"There were a lot of boats out on the water that day, so the water was a bit rough," McIntyre said.

The Dubois Volunteer Fire Department, Jasper Memorial EMS and Dubois County Sheriff's Department assisted with the investigation.
