EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – A murder investigation continues after police find a body inside an Evansville home on the evening of July 17, 2024. Evansville resident Leanne White has lived on Louisiana Street for three years and describes her neighborhood as “active” and “unsafe”. White also claims the home in question in the 300 block of East Louisiana Street has had problems in the past.

“I’m not surprised this happened,” says White. “I have said a few times down there, ‘I will call if there’s children involved, I don’t care’. So, very uneasy that there’s children down there.” White says children are known to be at the home from time to time, but Evansville police say they are unsure if children were present at the time of the murder. Details were not immediately known, and Sgt. Trudy Day says that is due to their search for witnesses.

“We knew immediately that this was a suspicious situation,” explains Sgt. Day. “Then it takes a while for detectives to start gathering information and talking to anyone involved, anyone who was there, any of the neighbors, and then that leads you, with that information, to say, ‘Okay, I think that we may have people of interest that we need to further investigate this towards a murder’.”

Sgt. Day compares the investigation to finding crucial pieces to a puzzle. “It’s a very meticulous puzzle because you can’t miss anything and you have to start immediately,” says Sgt. Day, “because even scenes will change overnight. You could have rain and your whole scene is changed.”

Officers responded to “shots fired” calls, and while White says she never heard gunfire, the incident left her on edge. “It’s bad that I felt, like, afraid to walk out my front door because I didn’t want to be a victim of a stray bullet,” explains White. “Never thought I’d live my life like that.”
