Excelsior Springs Native Em Rice joined the Excelsior Springs Fire Department as an EMT right out of High School.

The Excelsior Springs Fire Department recently welcomed a new emergency medical technician (EMT) to its ranks: Em Rice. A recent graduate of Excelsior Springs High School, and homegrown talent, Em is a high-achieving young woman who has been deeply involved in her community and school throughout her life.

The daughter of Brian and Christi Rice, Em is a familiar face in Excelsior Springs due to her parents’ active community involvement. Growing up, Em participated in dance and theater, interests that continued into high school. Her academic and extracurricular pursuits were equally impressive. When asked about her involvement, Em explained, “I tried to volunteer extensively and stay engaged in both the community and school. I served on the student council executive board, acted in numerous theater productions (including lead roles in two musicals), was a member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society, participated in Cappies, and qualified for state competitions in acting, speaking, and mock trial. Additionally, I volunteered with summer school and Waterfest, and a few years ago, I became a fire station cadet!”

Em developed a strong interest in the fire station cadet program about two years ago while exploring career options. With several first responder acquaintances, she sought their advice, encouragement, and mentorship. Completing the cadet application marked a turning point, as she realized her career aspirations. She described the program as a “good opportunity” and credits it with providing a crucial entry point into the field.

During high school Rice excelled in public speaking.

During her junior year, Em enrolled in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program at the Excelsior Springs Career Center. This hands-on program offered opportunities to gain medical experience and earn certifications. After completing the CNA program, she continued her education in the EMT program during her senior year. Em explained, “As a senior, I knew I wanted to become an EMT first. The school district was incredibly supportive, allowing me to take night EMT classes alongside my regular high school courses to obtain certification before graduation.” This demanding schedule paid off, as Em graduated at the top of her class with multiple certifications.

As Em prepared to enter the workforce, a job opening at the Excelsior Springs Fire Department emerged. She described this as a fortunate coincidence. “Everything fell into place. I passed my EMT test, earned my certification, and then received a job offer. It’s unusual to start a career right out of high school, but it’s possible, and it’s incredibly exciting!” Em attributes her early success to the support of Sergeant Nash St. John and Chief Potter, who recognized her work ethic and potential.

The Excelsior Springs Area Career Center offers numerous opportunities for students looking to study trades.

Em plans to continue her education and career in Excelsior Springs. This fall, she will attend firefighting school through the ESFD and work towards becoming a paramedic. As a new EMT, she is already giving back to her community. “I love the small-town atmosphere,” Em said. “Getting to know people and serving the community is incredibly rewarding.” The supportive environment at the fire station, fostered in part by her time as a cadet, has made her job even more enjoyable. She describes her coworkers as a second family.

Em is passionate about inspiring others to pursue careers in emergency services. She encourages interested individuals to apply for the Excelsior Springs Fire Department cadet program and explore the programs offered at the Excelsior Springs Career Center. “Being able to experience the work of first responders firsthand is such a good opportunity,” she said.
