The 21st year of the CJ Buckley Regatta takes place Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 29-30, in East Greenwich and on Greenwich Bay, where the regatta was born. The event has become the C420 Association’s National Junior Team Race Championship but began in 2003 as a local regatta organized by sailing friends to celebrate the life of a young Greenwich Bay Sailing Association (GBSA) sailor, CJ Buckley, who tragically lost his life to cancer at the age of 17. This unique regatta, organized and run by volunteers, many of whom live and work all over the US and return to volunteer annually, has grown in leaps and bounds since its modest inception and is now one of the most popular junior regattas on the East Coast summer sailing season that starts in Maine and ends in Florida each summer. A total of 24 teams of 6+ sailors from all over the U.S., the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Caribbean compete for the Club 420 Association’s National Junior Team Race Championship. An elite event, many of the winners go on to compete for the U.S. in world sailing championships and beyond.
