Cedar Rapids police refute shooting rumor, clarify teen injured during July 4 fight
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KGAN) — Cedar Rapids Police Department is denying a rumor that claims a young girl was shot downtown on July 4 in a Facebook post. According to the post, there was a fight in the 300 block of 1st St. SW around the same time the fireworks ended. A 13-year-old girl was knocked to the ground and her head was cut. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Cedar Rapids woman reportedly found at Lake MacBride State Park with drug paraphernalia, stolen weapon in her car
A Cedar Rapids woman was reportedly found with drug paraphernalia and a stolen weapon in her car while at a park near Solon. A DNR officer reports seeing an open container and a marijuana grinder inside a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe parked at Lake MacBride State Park just after 7:00 Saturday night. A search of the vehicle reportedly turned up more open containers, drug paraphernalia, a scale with white powder on it, and a gun that was later determined to be stolen.
Cedar Rapids Man Charged with Manslaughter Reaches Deal with Prosecutors
(Iowa City, IA) -- A Cedar Rapids man charged with voluntary manslaughter reaches a deal with prosecutors. Antonio Scotton is facing charges in the des of Waymond Thomas. Court documents say Scotton and another person were part of an assault when Thomas and one of his friends confronted them, leading to a fight. Records say Thomas' fried dropped a gun, which Scotton then picked up and fired. Thomas was shot and later died of his injuries.

Forgery, domestic abuse suspect taken into custody
A suspect in a 2023 forgery case and a 2018 domestic abuse case is now in custody. 38-year-old Antonio McLaurin of Chicago was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 2:45 Friday morning. McLaurin is accused of depositing a fraudulent $14,222.39 check into a victim’s account using an ATM at Green State Credit Union on Mormon Trek Boulevard on July 5th of last year. Coralville man faces OWI charge after ramming car into light pole on UI campus
A Coralville man faces a drunk driving charge after University of Iowa Police say he rammed his car into a light pole on campus. Officers were called to a one-vehicle accident on the 200 block of Newton Road just after 5:15 Thursday morning. Witnesses reported a 2005 Toyota Camry left the road and struck a light pole. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Diego Reyes Rafael of the Western Hills Estates manufactured housing community on Highway 6 West, reportedly showed signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking earlier in the morning. His breath alcohol content was measured at .269% at the scene and .234% on a Datamaster.
Charges dismissed against Illinois man accused of threatening apartment residents with firearm
All charges have been dismissed against an Illinois man accused of using a loaded gun to threaten two individuals in Coralville. 30-year-old Nico Johnson-Williams of Calumet City reportedly arrived uninvited at a 4th Avenue apartment last October and escorted one of the victims at gunpoint to the doorway of the residence, then pushed him through the threshold. Police say he then re-entered the apartment and pointed his gun at the other victim, demanding that they find his car keys. When the keys were retrieved and given to Johnson-Williams, he reportedly chambered a round in his firearm and told the victims to run.
