(Iowa News Service) – The U.S. Office for Civil Rights has issued a ruling ensuring that an Iowa man with disabilities is able to live in his home and receive round-the-clock medical care. Advocates for people with disabilities hope the move sets precedent for other people in Iowa and around the country.
FDA warns food firms in Iowa and Michigan about misbranding violations and more
The Food and Drug Administration sends warning letters to entities under its jurisdiction as part of its enforcement activities. Some letters are not posted for public view until weeks or months after they are sent. Business owners have 15 days to respond to FDA warning letters. Warning letters often are not issued until a company has been given months to years to correct problems.
New Park With Outdoor Stage Opens in Cedar Rapids
It's finally open! According to an article from CBS 2, another element of the 1st and 1st Development in Cedar Rapids held its grand opening last week. Welcome to 'The Yard!'. On July 3rd, the Yard and ImOn Stage at Kingston Yard officially opened to the public. The park is located right behind Big Grove Brewery and Pickle Palace and offers "extensive landscaping, a natural grass lawn, kids’ play area, state-of-the-art sound system, free Wi-Fi provided by ImOn, string lighting, paver walkways, and the main attraction; ImOn Stage." The event listing for the grand opening event says that the stage will not only be used for live music, but that it also has a 15’ wide and 8.5’ tall TV for showing movies and sporting events. Another cool thing about the stage is that it is made up of "reclaimed steel trusses" that were salvaged from a Cedar Rapids bridge that was built all the way back in 1910!
Cedar Rapids Man Charged with Manslaughter Reaches Deal with Prosecutors
(Iowa City, IA) -- A Cedar Rapids man charged with voluntary manslaughter reaches a deal with prosecutors. Antonio Scotton is facing charges in the des of Waymond Thomas. Court documents say Scotton and another person were part of an assault when Thomas and one of his friends confronted them, leading to a fight. Records say Thomas' fried dropped a gun, which Scotton then picked up and fired. Thomas was shot and later died of his injuries.

Hiawatha woman arrested for drunk driving crash at Lake Macbride beach
SOLON, Iowa (KCRG) - A Hiawatha woman was arrested Sunday after police said she was drinking and driving when she crashed into a tree at Lake Macbride beach. In a criminal complaint, police said Miranda Loehr, 31, crashed into a tree head-on, but when officers arrived they found an empty vehicle.

DNR Looking for Help with Annual Turkey Survey
(Lewis) The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is asking for the public’s help with its wild turkey production survey for July and August. John Lorenzen, with the DNR Office in Lewis, says participants are to note the date and the county where the turkey was seen, mark down if it is an adult female or male, and indicate the number of poults present. Lorenzen says the DNR uses the information to gauge next year’s population in part by nest success.

Iowa DNR issues water advisory for Lake Manawa, Prairie Rose Lake
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (WOWT) - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is advising against swimming in Lake Manawa, along with 14 other beaches across the state. The DNR says swimming is not recommended in Lake Manawa because of E. coli concerns. Swimming is not advised in Prairie Rose Lake near Harlan in Shelby County; the same is true for Blue Lake in Lewis and Clark State Park across the Missouri River from Decatur, Neb.
