Akron summer festivities transition this week from ribs, cannolis and gospel music to the opening events of the 86th annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby. A parade will kick off Monday at noon at Canal Park downtown and then proceed to the opening ceremonies at Cascade Plaza at 1 p.m.

The Akron Zoo Will Construct a New Hospital
The Akron Zoo was recently selected to receive $2 million from State of Ohio House Bill 2 for a new animal hospital, which will help the zoo continue to provide top-notch veterinary care for the more than 2,000 animals. The hospital is a $11.95 million project, and construction is slated to begin in 2025 with a 2026 opening. The new hospital will be located behind the Landon & Cynthia Knight Pride of Africa area along Diagonal Road. The 11,949-square-foot building will include a state-of-the-art surgery suite, intensive care unit and specialized spaces for the different species, including birds, hoofstock, primates and large carnivores. City Of Akron To Host 41st Annual National Night Out August 6
— On Tuesday, August 6, the City of Akron will host the 41st annual National Night Out in every ward across the city. National Night Out (NNO) is an annual community-building campaign, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch that promotes police-community relations and neighborhood unity. The goal of National Night Out is to strengthen participation in local programs that prevent and deter crime, in an effort to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. Events and activities will vary by location, but most will have snacks/refreshments, music, and activities for kids and all will be free to attend.

This year's Touch-A-Truck in Hudson is Saturday, July 27, between the McDowell and East Woods Schools on 120 N. Hayden Parkway. Horns and sirens will be active from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a sensory-friendly quiet hour from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Also, new this year, the Summit County Department of Disabilities and Inclusioneers will have a mobile sensory bus on site equipped with a variety of tools to reduce overstimulation in young attendees.
