Former Averett University basketball player killed in crash
FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WDBJ) - A recently-graduated basketball player at Averett University has been killed in a crash, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Jamael Carter, Jr. of Fayetteville, NC, a member of the Averett class of ‘24, was a four-year member of the Cougars team and leader on campus, says the university, which issued this statement:

Bush’s Homer Sparks Ninth Inning Rally in Thrilling Woodpeckers Win
Kinston, NC – Through eight innings Wednesday night at Grainger Stadium, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (43-49, 14-12) found themselves trailing by a run and heading towards their second straight defeat to begin the series. However, Will Bush launched a game-tying home run to lead off the ninth inning which catalyzed a four-run frame that powered Fayetteville to a 6-3 comeback win over the Down East Wood Ducks (45-45, 10-15). The Woodpeckers have now won five of eight over Down East in the season series this year.
Woodies fall to the Peckers in Game 2
The Wood Ducks hosted the Fayetteville Woodpeckers for winning Wednesday and game two of the series. In the top of the 1st the Woodpeckers were three up and three down. The Wood Ducks started the bottom of the 1st with a single from Echedry Vargas who was then caught stealing second base. Julian Brock hit a double followed by a home run from Arturo Disla, 0-2. In the top of the 2nd Nehomar Ochoa Jr. and Will Bush hit singles but were left there with a groundout. In the bottom of the 2nd the Wood Ducks started with Erick Alvarez reaching by a fielding error from Ochoa Jr. Chandler Pollard hit a double but both players were left on base.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. –Henric Bjelke of Campbell University has been named Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America. To be eligible for Cobalt Golf GCAA All-America Scholar, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I. In addition, they must participate in 50% of their team's competitive rounds, and have a stroke average under 76.0 in NCAA Division I. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.
