The man, whose name was not released, was wanted on charges of first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and felony conspiracy. When officers went to the Kings Cross Apartment on Ivanhoe Court about 9:20 a.m., Braden said, the suspect "barricaded himself" inside an apartment.

Braden said officers attempted to make contact with the suspect until about 1 p.m. before shots were fired from inside the residence then the suspect emerged and exchanged gunfire with three members of the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team. The wanted suspect was hit, and pronounced dead at the hospital, the chief said.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct a probe into the shooting, and an administrative investigation is being conducted by the department's Internal Affairs Unit, Braden said. None of the officers were injured, he said.
