Two men are accused of running a construction scam that targeted older adults in Floral Park. Nassau County police say the men knocked on the door of two homes owned by older adults, offered to do construction and asked for a cash deposit - with one totaling $15,000. After receiving the deposits, the men are accused of causing more damages to a chimney on one home and a roof on another. Police say 31-year-old David Young, of Philadelphia, and 25-year-old Adam Turner, who is homeless, have been charged with scheme to defraud among other charges. “I probably would not have people give me an estimate or do any work on the house unless I made some kind of solicitation, and most of us talk to our neighbors and our friends and we get recommendations," says neighbor Carol Hogg. Some concerned Floral Park residents have posted the Top Line Masonry flyer on Facebook to alert neighbors. Neighbor Dena Handlin says her mother is being vigilant. "She knows enough, to watch for the red flags, so the door is always locked. We don’t answer the door
," she says. The state Department of Financial Services advises consumers to avoid contractors who knock on your door, calling for immediate repairs and ask for money before starting the work. It also says to beware of discounts, don’t pay in cash and use licensed contractors. Anyone who believes they were a victim of this scam is asked to contact police. "
