Big 12 Program Eyeing Former Power Five Head Coach For Assistant Role

The 2024 college football season is one month away. This year will be full of changes with a lot of conference realignment across the sport.

One team that is eyeing a bounce-back year is TCU. After a College Football Playoff run two years ago, they went just 5-7 in 2023, which was a major disappointment. Now, the Horned Frogs are reportedly eyeing a prominent addition to the coaching staff.

Per a report from Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, they are targeting former Houston and West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen.

"TCU is targeting former Houston and West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen for a consultant role on the Horned Frogs staff, sources tell me and Chris Hummer for 247Sports," Zenitz said .

TCU head coach Sonny Dykes has been busy this offseason changing up the coaching staff. They brought in Andy Avalos as the new defensive coordinator and Kendal Briles is entering his second season as offensive coordinator.

Holgorsen spent eight seasons with West Virginia, compiling a 61-41 record, and then spent five seasons in Houston, going 31-28 with three bowl game trips.

In 2023, Holgorsen was fired after losing three straight and ending the year with a 4-8 record in Houston's first Big 12 campaign.

Houston is on tap for the $14.8 million in buyout money for Holgorsen, although there is a mitigation clause if he gets a job elsewhere.

TCU hosts Houston on October 4 in a Big 12 showdown, and Holgorsen could be coaching against his former employer.
