Storms rolled through the Four States Friday night causing widespread damage

QUAPAW. Okla. — Power remains off for residents in the Four State area as cleanup crews in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma removed thousands of downed trees and tree limbs after Friday night’s storm.

Liberty Utilities reported outages in Seneca, Anderson, and southeast Kansas.

Quapaw Nation Marshal Service Chief Charlie Addington said, “Hopefully, power will be restored in the Quapaw area by noon.”

“Downed trees are everywhere – on houses – cars – everywhere,” Addington said.

The National Weather Service in Tulsa reported trees measuring up to eight inches in diameter were down in the Miami area and across Highway 60 between Wyandotte and Seneca.

Utility poles in the Commerce area were reported down.  The weather service reported “significant damage in Hockerville, including a roof to a shop blown across a road and six utility poles blown down.”

“We don’t know if it was a tornado or straight winds that hit Quapaw,” Addington said. “Fortunately, there were no fatalities.”

Historical data shows 42 tornadoes have hit Ottawa County since 1950.

He said the heating and air conditioning units on top of the Quapaw School buildings were blown off.

The school posted on social media, “There is considerable damage at the elementary school and in the community.”

All activities scheduled for Saturday are cancelled.

Winds were estimated between 80 and 100 mph, Addington said.

The National Weather Service reported wind speeds of 68 mph.

The storms moved in from southeast Kansas around 6:30 p.m., hitting Picher, Quapaw, Wyandotte and then onto Seneca, Addington said.
