JOPLIN, MO – Missouri Southern baseball is getting the ball rolling early on their upcoming season.

The team hosted its annual prospect camp for high schoolers around the area to showcase their talent. Position players were evaluated in the morning, while the pitchers were evaluated in the afternoon.

The Lions are coming off of an incredible year winning the MIAA Championship and hosting the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament.

For the players in the offseason, it’s all about the community. Players say, guiding prospects through what it’s like to be a Lion, is a key component to the team’s winning culture.

Entering his 18th season at the helm, head coach Bryce Darnell talks highly about his prospects and how they go the extra mile.

“We got kids from all over come to camp,” Coach Darnell says. “We have to talk about it as a staff, but, last year there were three guys on our team that came to this camp last year around this time that we hadn’t otherwise known about.”

“I remember when I was going to these camps,” Fifth year pitcher Kyle Moore mentions. “I would always look up to players and always ask them questions about how they got to where they are. Us being here definitely helps them, especially with certain positions because we can give them insight.”

“As far as what it means for our program, it’s just another aspect of recruiting and it’s all about players. It’s a large part to your program,” Coach Darnell adds.

The Lions won’t start their regular season until February, but as Coach Darnell and Kyle Moore mentioned, these prospect camps are the cornerstones of Missouri Southern Baseball.
