OKLAHOMA – Beginning Thursday, Oklahomans should see a minor cut in their grocery receipts.

The state cut the 4.5% state sales tax on some groceries after Gov. Kevin Stitt signed House Bill 1955. The bill eliminates only the state portion of the sales tax on groceries or $3.83 on an $85 grocery bill , according to OKpolicy.org.

According to the Oklahoma Municipal League, sales tax is the most critical revenue source for Oklahoma cities and towns.

Grove City Manager Debbie Bottoroff strongly agrees.

“Rural communities and small towns depend on their grocery sales taxes to help operate their communities,” Bottoroff said.

Oklahomans buying groceries would still pay city and county sales taxes. Eliminating the state’s sales tax on groceries doesn’t mean removing all sales taxes.

For instance, Miami residents’ sales tax is 9.5 percent, and Grove’s is 10.2 percent. The Oklahoma state sales tax will be reduced for certain groceries, but they still have county and sales taxes.

    Taxing Jurisdiction Grove Miami
Oklahoma state sales tax 4.50% 4.50%
    County sales tax 1.70% 1.35%
    City 4.00% 3.65%
    Combined Sales Tax 10.2% 9.50 %
