Wichita Falls, TX — MSSU football fell in its season opener to Midwestern State 18-11.

In the first half, the two teams traded field goals as both offenses struggled to move the ball downfield. Lions Kicker Drake Reese put Southern on the board early 3-0, but the MSU defense came up big in forcing a safety.

In the second half, the Mustangs got the first touchdown of the game courtesy of a two yard run. The Lions responded in the fourth quarter with a 72-yard drive capped off by a De’Shawn Larson touchdown run. The sophomore running back finished the evening with 84 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown.

Despite Southern tying the game with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth, a 21-yard run by MSU’s Devin Cross proved to be the difference maker as the Mustangs would go on to win the game 18-11.

Up next, Missouri Southern will host Pitt State and the Gorillas on Saturday, September 7th at 7 p.m.
