    Tourism to Cabrillo National Monument generates $76M for local economy

    SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Recent data showed that more than 800,000 tourists at Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma contributed thousands of dollars to the local economy.

    According to a recent report by the National Park Service , 810,000 people who visited the monument in 2023 spent an estimated $54.3 million in areas around the park.

    Most of visitor spending went toward lodging expenses (30.7%) followed by restaurants (23.3%) and gas (15.6%).

    Their contributions benefited 678 jobs, $29.7 million in labor income and $46.6 million in added value to local communities, the data showed. In addition, tourism at Cabrillo National Monument resulted in more than $76 million benefiting the local economy.

    “We’re proud that Cabrillo National Monument supports jobs and generates economic benefit to communities near the park,” said Chris Rodriguez, superintendent of the park.

    Within the past decade, the years that saw the most money collected from tourists at the park were 2015, 2016 and 2017, which all reported upwards of $56 million in visitor spending.
