AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — A huge pile of trash was only one of the serious problems at The Edge at Lowry apartment complex in Aurora over the weekend.

A wild shootout at the complex focused attention on myriad problems residents say have been plaguing the property for months.

FOX31 visited the complex Monday and saw broken windows covered with doors. Someone had even set up what appeared to be a makeshift snack store out of a basement window.

More than 12 hours after the shooting, investigators were still at the complex. Police tape surrounded two buildings. Several cars were pierced by bullets, some with broken glass.

Residents said a wild shootout played out in the parking lot around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Warfare. Warfare. It was different caliber of guns, different kinds of guns. You don’t expect to hear that when you are laying your head down at night,” resident Cindy Romero said.

FOX31 saw a clip of surveillance video showing several armed men carrying long rifles with scopes and handguns shortly before the shooting. The shooting at the complex at the corner of Dallas Street and East 12th Avenue left a man with life-threatening wounds.

Police reported finding numerous shell casings .

“I got down on the floor,” a resident told FOX31.

Apartment management same as another controversial complex

Resident Edward Romero said he’s been complaining unsuccessfully about several issues for some time now.

“Every phone number they have listed on any apartment complex renter (form) is not a good number anymore. They disconnected their phones. They are not answering their emails, and they basically just left us,” Romero said.

Romero’s car was also hit by gunfire at the complex, which is operated by CBZ Management.

That’s the same company that also managed the controversial Fitzsimons apartment complex , shut down last week through a city of Aurora abatement process after what a spokesperson said were repeated code violations. Residents were forced from their homes in a week.

Back at the Edge at Lowry complex, worries continue to grow.

“Every night. Every night there is shooting everywhere. I’m scared,” neighbor Sonia Medez said.

FOX31 was told the problems at the complex grew worse when many migrants began moving in about six or seven months ago. That’s when FOX31 was told trash began to pile up, now spilling into an alleyway.

The city plans to pick up the trash on Aug. 22.

FOX31 reached the city through emails and text messages asking if more would be done to help make the complex safer. That response will be posted here when received.

FOX31 also reached the complex’s management company.

“Unfortunately, we have no other information or comment to provide from the owners at this time but if that changes we will be sure to reach out,” a spokesperson for the complex said.

Meanwhile, a hearing on the issues surrounding the Fitzsimons complex issues is scheduled for Wednesday in Arapahoe County district court.
