DENVER ( KDVR ) — Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, but thousands will continue to enjoy Colorado’s 4,000 lakes and reservoirs well into the fall.

“There’s no telephone, no worrying about anything — just the sunshine and the water,” said one boater at Chatfield Reservoir.

Recreational boating is on the rise with a 36% increase nationwide in boating-related businesses in 2023, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

Labor Day brought out all kinds of water enthusiasts at Chatfield Reservoir. Boaters told FOX31 that safety is important when the water becomes crowded.

“Watch your speed, watch boats with the orange flags lifting up,” said one boater.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife warns that not wearing a life jacket is the cause of the majority of water-related deaths. Life jackets are required for minors on all water vessels.

No one found: Douglas County Search and Rescue activated twice for SOS signals

Fall boaters should watch for changing weather conditions. Rain can quickly affect water levels and surface conditions.

CPW said anyone operating a water vessel should also properly clean and dry it to prevent the spread of species like zebra mussels .

The CPW website has resources boaters can use to find an inspection and decontamination site.
