KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Millions of dollars worth of property for one Jackson County man transferred out of his name. A week after calling collections, county assessments and political leaders, there was no action.

“Just had ran into a brick wall so that’s when I decided that I would call Channel 4,” Mike Huff said.

Those questions led to the discovery of a glitch in Jackson County’s real estate properties system.

“There’s a couple million dollars’ worth of property, over $2 million,” Huff said.

When asked what his reaction was when he realized all of his property was no longer under his name.

“Well, my heart rate picked up. Of course, I haven’t been able to sleep since I found this,” Huff said.

A discovery that would knock anybody off their feet.

Huff had sold a strip mall location to an LLC group three weeks ago. When he went to renew his license plates he found on his tax receipts that the county’s system showednthat he had sold not just the one piece, but all of his property.

So, he got to work calling his elected officials, the county and more.

“I just couldn’t get any help to try and figure this out,” he said.

FOX4 took his concerns straight to the director of the record of deeds.

For hours we went back and forth, with Huff there on Facetime. Their system was showing he was still the owner, but when he went to register his vehicle over and over again he was told the opposite.

More than two hours into our visit refusing to leave until we had answers, FOX4 discovered that in fact the issue, of how this LLC became the owner of all of Huff’s property was because of a glitch.

A glitch with the county’s third-party vendor “Payit” and their payment processing service.

Huff says he figured he’d get the problem fixed, his concern, however, is that other people may not have the same luck and may not even know that this has happened.

His advice, check your tax receipts and if you see these issues, call the collections department.
