    Treads & Threads 2024: Red Carpet special

    KANSAS CITY, Kan. — FOX4’s John Holt is out at Kansas Speedway on Saturday night for The University of Kansas Health System’s 2024 Treads & Threads event , benefiting The University of Kansas Cancer Center’s new global destination building .

    The health system and cancer center say the new building will help combine patient care and research in one place, providing the opportunity to give patients cutting-edge treatments and access to innovative clinical trials.

    During the red carpet program, Holt will speak with Lisa Weatherspoon, a breast cancer survivor and clinical trial participant who will share her story and discuss the importance of representation in medical research.

    He’ll speak with health system VP Shawn Long and cancer funding partner Jason Dalen about the history of the event, the cancer center’s community importance and how funding partners help the cancer center achieve its goals.

    Dr. Joel McGuirk will share more about the new building and cellular therapies, and talk about the future of cancer care.

    Holt will be joined by event chairs Mike & Stephanie Kulp, and vice chairs Mike Maddox and Pam Breuckmann to talk about the importance of the event and the work their organizations are doing in Kansas City.

    New cancer center senior VP Jack Beal and donors/advocates Tom and Theresa Walsh will talk more about how funding from the event will benefit research, and the importance of survivorship.

    Health System Chief Medical Officer Dr. Steve Stites and Physician-in-Chief Dr. Jeffrey Holzbeierlein will talk about the potential for the cancer center to be the epicenter for hematologic malignancies and cellular therapeutics where it’s already region’s largest and most experienced program. In addition to cancer, they’ll talk about the potential for it to treat other diseases.

    CEO Bob Page and Kansas City President Tammy Peterman will round out the red carpet with a discussion about how investments in the cancer center will help benefit the community and tap into Kansas City’s entrepreneurial spirit, and desire to do big things, including taking the lead in the fight against cancer.
