KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sixteen units at an apartment complex are displaced after a fire early Sunday morning in Overland Park, Kansas.

According to the Overland Park Fire Department and Consolidated Fire District #2, crews were dispatched to London Square Apartments — near the area of 62nd and Robinson Streets — at about 1 a.m.

Upon arrival, crews reported smoke and fire from the two-story apartment building where evacuations had already started.

However, one resident was reported to still be inside, but crews quickly located the person and brought them to safety.

OPFD said fighters then knocked down an exterior fire on a second-story balcony, but as they attempted to stop it from spreading, the fire had already made its way into the attic.

It took approximately one hour for crews to bring the fire under control.

Four units suffered significant water and fire damage, and the power had been cut to the entire complex. This resulted in 16 units being displaced.

According to OPFD, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, fire investigators believe that a “careless discard of smoking materials” is to blame.

Fire investigators also believe that several of the damaged units had no working smoke alarms, and fortunately, residents were alerted about the fire by a neighbor.

OPFD said, “Overland Park Fire wants to remind smokers to completely extinguish smoking materials in sand or water before discarding. Additionally, everyone should have and maintain working smoke alarms. If you need assistance with smoke alarms, please contact your local fire department.”
