RUSH COUNTY, Ind. — A tornado was spotted in Rush County Tuesday night as the threat of severe weather rolled through central Indiana.

The National Weather Service confirmed around 8 p.m. that its local radar detected a tornado near the town of Glenwood that was last seen moving east at a speed of 35 mph.

NWS said the greatest risks include flying debris that will be dangerous to individuals without shelter as mobile homes will likely be damaged or completely destroyed. The alert said that extensive damage could occur to roofs, windows and vehicles in the affected areas, adding that tree damage is also likely.

Rush County EMA Director Charles Kemker confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that the majority of the damage reported so far is due to downed trees. Multiple power lines have also been reported as the Rush County Sheriff’s Office urged residents to avoid contacting 911 for any non-emergency calls.

Kemker added that most of the damage has been restricted to a portion of 244 east of State Road 3 but crews will not know the full extent of damage until Wednesday.

The EMA director also confirmed that a barn in the area was damaged but could not provide any specifics as of Tuesday night.

    The affected areas include:

    • Connersville
    • Blooming Grove
    • Columbia
    • Brownsville
    • Laurel
    • Nulltown
    • Alquina
    • Andersonville
