Needed rain falls in central Indiana for first time in nearly two weeks; New cool spell coming

HUMIDITY SURGES

It’s back! For the first time in well over a week the dew point is nearing 70°. Up 10° from Wednesday, this will aid in developing some needed rainfall.

This was the first measured rainfall since August 2nd, nearly weeks ago. August 2024 entering the day was the driest in three years with less than three-quarters of an inch of rainfall. Some locations are having a very dry summer, Bloomington and Muncie rainfall deficits are near or exceeding 4″.

Showers late day were more pronounced northwest and moving east, sliding and entering the northwest side of Indianapolis just after 6pm. A quick downpour is possible before 8pm then we expect a lull. Better rain chance comes late tonight .

Aided by higher humidity and more unstable air the better chance of rain comes late night with a few t-storms in the mix. Peak rainfall coverage 40% around 2am . With that surge in humidity, some locally higher rainfall totals (exceeding 1″) are possible. This rain will NOT be evenly distributed and weakens as it enters eastern Indiana predawn.

This uptick in humidity is well underway and with brighter skies tomorrow, the warmest of the next seven days falls on Friday. However, a cold front will pass late night Friday, and a renewed mild spell will get underway through much of next week producing a string of afternoon highs only in the 70s.
