BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — One person was hospitalized after a bus crash in Bloomington on Tuesday.

According to a press release, around 9:09 a.m., officers with the Bloomington Police Department were called to the intersection of North Indiana Avenue and East Cottage Grove Avenue on a report of a vehicle crash that caused injuries.

After an investigation, police determined a 2016 Ford F-250 pulling a trailer was involved in a crash with a Bloomington Transit bus. The truck was heading west on Cottage Grove Avenue and the bus was southbound on Indiana Avenue before the crash.

During an interview with police, the driver of the truck indicated he was stopped at a sign on Cottage Grove Avenue when he observed the bus stopping. Indiana Avenue doesn’t have stop signs at its intersection with Cottage Grove Avenue, so the driver of the F-250 thought the bus had stopped to pick up passengers.

When the bus stopped, the driver of the F-250 began to proceed through the intersection of Indiana and Cottage Grove Avenues. The bus and F-250 subsequently crashed in the intersection.

The driver of the bus told police the F-250 pulled into her direct path of travel, and she could not stop the bus in time to avoid a crash.

Both vehicles were pushed off the roadway toward the southwest corner of the intersection after the crash. Before the vehicles came to rest, the F-250 struck a fire hydrant and a house, causing damage to both.

The driver of the bus was transported from the scene to a local hospital to receive treatment for her injuries. Police indicated that, in their crash report, the driver of the F-250 was noted for failing to yield to the bus.

BPD indicated that it does not know exactly how many passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash because many of them left the area on foot before officers arrived at the scene.

Only the bus driver was transported from the scene of the crash via ambulance. Per BPD, six bus passengers and a passenger in the F-250 reported that they sustained injuries during the crash.

Police did not issue any citations during their investigation of the crash. Both the F-250 and the bus were towed from the area after the crash.

As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
