INDIANAPOLIS — A person was critically injured in a shooting in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to the area of Wilson and 10th Streets around 3:30 p.m. on a report of a person shot. When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult male victim with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds in a car.

Police rendered aid to the man until medics arrived and transported him to a local hospital in critical condition. Investigators believe the victim was the only person in the car at the time of the shooting.

“I think it goes back to what we always talk about, conflict resolution,” IMPD Sgt. William Young said during a media briefing. “Just being patient with each other, slowing things down. Lots of times we’ve seen where it can be a road rage or a social media beef or just any type of confrontation that you have that results in gun violence.

“I always tell folks too, when it comes to the suspect’s family, not only is the victim’s family being hurt, but the suspect is being hurt. They’re hurting their families because sometimes these folks have to spend decades in prison based off of one mistake that you made or one decision that you made that resulted in somebody losing their life or somebody getting hurt due to gun violence.”

Law enforcement indicated that the incident unfolded near Riley Children’s Hospital. IMPD does not believe the hospital was locked down during the incident.

IMPD received assistance from Indiana University Indianapolis police and hospital police at the scene. No uninvolved citizens were injured during the shooting.

At this point in their investigation of the incident, police have not taken any suspects into custody. IMPD aggravated assault detectives are still looking into the circumstances that led to the shooting.

“We were just out for a nice long bike ride with our group of friends,” said Aaron Stoude, a bicyclist who claims to have witnessed the incident. “We were headed east on the cultural trail when we heard some gunshots and saw a gentleman wreck his car.”

Police are asking those with security camera footage or other information regarding the shooting to contact IMPD at (317) 327-3475. Alternatively, tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477.

“We are becoming a little bit complacent and accepting it as part of our daily lives,” Stoude said. “And I don’t think that’s healthy for everyone, especially just having some normal folks going out for a casual afternoon ride”
