Man pleads guilty in 2019 death of Davidson County baby

DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A Denton man on trial for the death of a 3-month-old baby entered a plea this week.

According to the Davidson County courts, Brandon Patton, of Denton, now 35, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to second-degree murder and intentional child abuse causing serious bodily injury.

Patton was sentenced to a minimum of 22.5 years and a maximum of 28 years for the murder charge, and then between 12.5 years and 16 years for the child abuse charge. These sentences will run consecutively. He received credit for 1813 days, or just under 5 years, spent in jail.

Background

Patton killed his three-month-old daughter Alyssa Patton in August 2019. He called 911 and officials arrived on the scene, finding the baby unconscious and unresponsive . She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

At the time of the baby’s death, her family spoke to FOX8 and described her as a “miracle” baby , expressing shock at her father’s abuse, saying he never showed aggression towards her or her other two children before Alyssa Patton’s death.

The family also had to cope with a scam GoFundMe claiming to be for Alyssa Patton at the time of her death .

Her mother told FOX8 in 2019 that she believed her daughter would be an enormous light in the world.
