WINDSOR, N.C. (WNCT) — Deputies with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve an involuntary commitment order on a man Tuesday when they said he pointed a gun at them.

Tyshawn Demmoris Barnes, 28, allegedly fired shots at Bertie County deputies in 2019, so they approached the home with caution.

Deputies commanded Barnes to exit when they arrived. He came out of the home with a gun pointed in the direction of law enforcement and attempted to fire it, but it didn’t shoot.

Barnes went back into the home and came out again, still pointing the gun at the deputies. Law enforcement then fired at Barnes.

Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene. As standard by protocol, the deputies were placed on administrative leave and the SBI is investigating the shooting.

“Today’s unfortunate circumstances are never the outcomes we wish for. Mental health illnesses are more rampant than ever across the country and working to help people in their time of mental crisis is something we work tirelessly for every day,” Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members of the individual involved in today’s tragic events, as well as, the officers who responded and their families.
