Two older residents were critically injured after a passing driver and neighbors rescued them from a mobile home fire near Frederica on Wednesday.

The fire was reported shortly after 3 a.m. by a passing driver on Sycamore Drive in the High Point Mobile Home Park, said Assistant State Fire Marshal B. Scott Bullock. The park is just west of Route 1 in the Little Heaven area, about 3 miles north of Frederica.

The two residents were pulled from the burning home by the good Samaritans before emergency crews arrived.

When firefighters from Magnolia and Bowers Beach responded, they saw fire engulfing an attached deck and spreading into the home. Assistance was requested from other fire companies and emergency medical services.

The residents were taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital and then transferred to Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania, south of Philadelphia. Their condition was listed as critical, Bullock said.

One of the people who helped rescue the residents was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and was released.

The fire was declared under control shortly before 4 a.m.

While the cause is still being investigated, Bullock said, damages are estimated at $20,000.
