FREDERICK, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A Frederick County man is recovering in a hospital after a fire broke out at his home.

“I was freaked out because I was scared for my dad,” Candace Sier recounted.

Sier said her father, Brett Russ, was pulled out of his burning home last week.

“I had no information except that he was trapped in the house and then when we got there, I found out that he was trying to break out of the basement door and that’s where the firemen pulled him out of,” Sier said.

Two teens accused of starting fire at Green Hill Park, causing $230k in damages

Russ had gotten his hands broken and severely burned while trying to escape the flames. Seir said with his injuries she’s not sure how her father will be able to go back to work, which he loves so much.

“He touches up vehicles so this part will be really hard because he broke his pinkie on his right hand and both of his hands on his fingers are burned,” Sier said. “So it’s going to be a very long time before he could work, if he can work.”

But Seir said the overwhelming support from friends and neighbors has made a difference as he gets through recovery.

“We’re just unbelievably shocked on how much the community has helped out and is providing,” Sier said. “Just an absolute relief and if it wasn’t for God, he certainly would not be here.”

The Frederick County Fire Department told DC News Now that it was still investigating the cause of the fire.
