Fireworks shoot at Galesburg firefighters while fighting garage fire

Firefighters in Galesburg had to deal with a large amount of fireworks shooting at them while fighting a garage fire Saturday afternoon.

The Galesburg Fire Department said that at 2:59 p.m., they responded to the 900 block of Bateman Street in response to a structure fire at a home in the area. When they arrived, they found smoke and fire coming from the detached garage on the property and quickly dispatched multiple hose lines to fight the blaze.

However, they were slowed somewhat by mortar shells and aerial fireworks that were located inside the garage lighting as a result of the fire and propelling toward them.

No one was injured, but the garage was declared a loss with damages coming in around $18,000. A vehicle located nearby and a trailer received some minor damage from the fire.

The fire department is continuing to investigate how the fire started.
