Several restaurants in Alachua County have been forced to pay hefty fines for disciplinary actions after being cited for various health code violations since the start of the year, state records show.
Which Alachua County restaurants had the most fines?
The restaurants that received the biggest fines were Wahoos Seafood Grill and Ballyhoo Grill, both in Gainesville. Each was slapped with $1,200 fines twice in 2024 for violations dating back to late 2023.
Wahoo was fined $1,200 in March for two violations on Dec. 19, 2023, and another $1,200 in January for five violations on Oct. 11, 2023. Meanwhile, Ballyhoo Grill was hit with $1,200 fines in March for three violations on Nov. 27, 2023, and in January for two violations on Sept. 11, 2023.
Both establishments were temporarily closed on those occasions.
Other highlighted restaurants with fines
Other restaurants that faced hefty penalties included Bagel Company ($800 fine), Los Avina Mexican Restaurant ($800), Ritters of Gainesville Inc. ($800), La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant ($800) and Zaxby's ($800).
Bangkok Square, David's Real Pit BBQ, Copper Monkey West and China 88 Food Inc. were each fined $600 or $400 for violations earlier this year.
While the disciplinary actions and fines were imposed in 2024, several of the cited health code infractions occurred in 2023, according to the state's records on restaurant inspections in Alachua County.
