The Alabama woman who set up a fake date and convinced the target to be blindfolded and handcuffed as she allowed another man to stab him 19 times pleaded guilty just as her trial was about to start.

A judge Monday in Geneva County sentenced Shalyn Diaz to 10 years in prison after she entered a guilty plea to attempted murder in the January stabbing, prosecutors say. According to the Geneva County Sheriff’s Office, Diaz contacted the victim via Facebook Messenger on Jan. 6 and set up a date for the next day during which they would drive around the area in her car. She picked him up at his Dothan apartment around 7 p.m.

Unbeknownst to the victim, a man named Robert Hall was hiding in the trunk.

After driving around awhile, Diaz pulled over and requested that the victim sit in the back seat while wearing handcuffs and a blindfold. After the victim did so, Hall snuck out of the trunk and went into the backseat. Hall started choking the victim with a cord and stabbing him, deputies said. Hall yanked the victim out of the car by the cord and stabbed him several more times, per deputies. In all, Hall stabbed the victim 19 times.

Hall and Diaz then sped away in the car, leaving the victim for dead on the side of the road. However, a driver spotted the victim who was still wearing the handcuffs with the cord around his neck, and hailed for help. Paramedics rushed the victim to a hospital in critical condition, and he ended up surviving his injuries.

Cops arrested Hall and Diaz within a couple of days and a grand jury indicted them on attempted murder and kidnapping charges in April. Hall pleaded guilty to attempted murder on June 12 and a judge sentenced him to life in prison, Dothan ABC affiliate WDHN reported.
