Sheriff Vern Warnke of Merced County has issued a stern warning to residents and visitors, ordering the closure of the Merced River and San Joaquin River for recreational use. The closure, effective immediately, encompasses all access areas throughout the County.

The decision comes as a result of increased water flow in the rivers due to melting snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. While warmer weather may entice individuals to seek relief in the water, Warnke emphasized the extreme danger posed by the current conditions.

"Despite the rising temperatures, I urge everyone to refrain from entering any river, creek, or canal for recreational purposes," Warnke stated. "The water is cold and moving swiftly, making it incredibly hazardous. I implore you not to risk your life or the lives of our emergency responders."

Warnke's order underscores the importance of prioritizing safety amid the allure of outdoor recreation. With the swift and frigid waters of the Merced and San Joaquin Rivers posing a significant risk, residents are urged to exercise caution and adhere to the closure directive.

Merced County Sheriff's Office remains vigilant in monitoring water conditions and will continue to enforce the closure order until it is deemed safe to resume recreational activities on the rivers. In the meantime, individuals are encouraged to explore alternative ways to beat the heat and enjoy the outdoors safely.
