The National Weather Service in Reno has forecast seasonable temperatures and typical afternoon breezes for today, but changes are on the horizon as an early-season cold front moves into the region later this week. Thursday and Friday will bring gusty winds and dry conditions, raising concerns about critical fire weather across northern Nevada.

The cold front, expected to arrive Friday, will usher in much cooler temperatures and a chance of precipitation, particularly in Lassen and Northern Washoe Counties. Highs in the valleys will drop to the 80s, while Sierra Mountain communities can expect temperatures ranging from the upper 50s to mid-70s. Overnight lows in the Sierra could approach freezing.

As the cold front passes, winds are forecasted to gust up to 40 mph, potentially causing blowing dust in desert areas and choppy conditions on lakes. While precipitation chances range from 10% in Mono County to 50% in Lassen County, there is a possibility of light snow at higher elevations Friday night.

Looking ahead, a warming trend is expected to begin next week, with temperatures possibly reaching the 90s by midweek. However, the upcoming days will require caution, particularly for outdoor activities, due to the gusty winds and cooler temperatures.
