A new grocery store offering free produce to students and families in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood opened its doors on Monday, according to local leaders. The Goodr Grocery Store, located at MLK Middle School, is dedicated to ensuring that students and their families have access to fresh produce and essential food items throughout the 2024-25 school year.

This innovative store is the first of its kind in California and aims to address food insecurity in the Bayview neighborhood, where access to healthy food options has been a growing challenge, city officials stated. The store will allow parents and students to shop for free produce and other essentials once a week during scheduled store hours, according to local leaders.

School officials believe the grocery store will significantly improve food distribution in the area, providing much-needed support to the community, backer's stated . The YMCA of Greater San Francisco has partnered with the school to provide the space necessary to house the store, further demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the well-being of local families.
