NYC warns against swimming at two Staten Island beaches and one in Brooklyn

New York City officials are warning people to avoid swimming and wading at three city beaches due to poor water quality.

Wolfe’s Pond Beach and South Beach, both on the southern shore of Staten Island, and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn were under an advisory as of Friday morning.

The advisories are often triggered by heavy rainfall which, due to the city’s antiquated sewage system, can cause excessive waterborne bacteria or other sanitary issues like toxic contaminants and raw sewage in city waterways.

Health department officials monitor the water conditions by taking samples across city beaches.

Last summer, South Beach was under a water quality advisory for high enterococci levels on more than 30 days of the season.
