Bluejay Pitchers Key to 11 Win Campaign
The strongest part for Perry baseball this most recent season was the pitching. The Bluejays went 11-18, while 11 guys saw time on the mound. The one-two punch of Owen Myers and Drake Levan was quite successful. Both guys would finish with a record of 5-4. Myers pitched a team high 73 innings, struck out 79, and had an ERA of 1.63. Levan went 49 2/3 innings. The senior fanned 59 with an ERA of 4.65. Kaelan Davis appeared in 11 games while going 0-2. The lefty pitched 27 2/3 innings and picked up 16 K’s. Geren Kenney would pick up the only win that Myers or Levan did not receive. Kenney went 1-1 and appeared in 8 games. Wyitt Belgarde, Ty Brokaw, Reid Iben, Ian Fisher, and Kain Killmer all also saw time on the bump. The first four all appear poised to have larger pitching roles next year, while Killmer will be wrestling at UW-Platteville.
Boone Little League team reaches Semifinals
Boone Little League’s Intermediate All Stars faced off in a Central Region Tournament game Wednesday afternoon. The game turned out to be an instant classic. Chase Wulf took the hill for Boone and exchanged scoreless frames until the 5th. Boone catcher Macon Robinson’s 2 out RBI double would put Boone up 1-0.
Jayettes Finish the Year 10-19
Perry softball had their season come to an end on Tuesday. Dallas County foe, DCG, sent the Jayettes home in the Regional Championship. Perry finished the year at 10-19. Ten wins was one better than the previous year when they finished with nine. They started and ended the year well. The Jayettes were 5-7 after the first 12 games. Then, an eight game losing streak happened. The final nine games Perry went 5-4. The Jayettes finished top four in the Heart of Iowa Conference as they went 6-8. The offense was led by Karagyn Whelchel, who hit .454. Pitching relied on Maci Tunink for most of the season. Perry will have to replace 6 seniors for next season. All 6 played in Tuesday’s loss to DCG.
Softball Game Recap: Dallas Center-Grimes Victorious
It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Dallas Center-Grimes had no problem doing just that on Tuesday. They never let the Perry Bluejays onto the board and left with a 10-0 victory. Dallas Center-Grimes might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team's won 19 matchups by six runs or more this season.
Bluejay Baseball Finishes with Most Wins Since 2016
Perry Baseball was eliminated last week in the Regional Quarterfinals. Grinnell beat the Bluejays 4-0. Perry finished the year at 11-18. 11 wins is the most for a Perry team since 2016. This is the second straight year the Bluejays finished with double digit wins. In conference play, they finished tied for 4th with a record of 6-8.
Falcons Fall In Sub-state Final
Chariton scored seven runs in the final two innings and beat OA-BCIG 10-1 in a class 2A sub-state final played Tuesday night at Boone. The Falcons out-hit the Chargers 7-6 with three of those hits coming in the 4th inning in which they scored their only run. Jaxx DeJean, Brysen Kolar, and Kade Spotts each had two hits.
Perry softball makes heroic run, baseball season wraps
Softball (10-19) After the season wrapped with a win, the Perry’s course in the postseason was set for a road trip to Denisons-Schleswig on June 11. Putting in 150 miles on the odometer, the Jayettes moved on to the semifinals with a a 6-0 win over Denison-Schleswig in tow, boasting a three-run, two RBI performance from Kalley Whelchel.
Boone Little League drops to Indiana
Boone Little League’s Intermediate All Stars faced Indiana in a Central Region Tournament match up Tuesday in Ankeny. Boone got on the scoreboard first in the second inning as Ryder Hilsabeck scored on a Colton Ross Sacrifice fly. Noah Gorman would retire the first 6 Indiana batters in order and Boone took a 1-0 lead into the 3rd.
