    Deer River City Council highlights

    2024-04-14

Deer River City Council opened Monday’s regular city council meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. Approved the regular meeting minutes as written.

    Approved bills for $35,065.93.

Richard Fieldsend, Deer River Public Works, reported that well number four has some more problems. He has ordered a new chemical pump and today the VFD system went out. Fieldsend said the City has received an award of excellence for the operations of the wastewater system for the Minnesota Department of Health.

He said the lift station services are scheduled for this Spring.

Fieldsend asked to have the lift stations cleaned at the same time. Council approved to allow Nelson Sanitation to conduct the cleaning. Fielsend is estimating this service will cost $3,000 to $4,000.

Fieldsend said the crew has been installing new signs around Deer River. There have been several stop signs replaced, new signs were put up at the compost site and new directional signs were put up for the Lundeen recreational area.

Fieldsend explained someone has been dumping garbage in the City forest again and it will take a roll-off dumpster to clean it up. Fieldsend will wait for things to dry up before getting this done.

The public works crew will be attending the OSHA training and Fieldsend and Deer River Mayor Steve Geving will be attending the AWWA annual training next month.

Fieldsend said the city auction is online and will run for another week. Bids are to be submitted to city hall.

The annual city residential clean-up days are April 26-28, 2024.

Fieldsend said the construction season will be starting soon. There is a meeting scheduled for Wednesday this week to get the phase two project underway. This will start up on April 22 or 29 depending on the road restrictions being lifted.

Phase three bids were opened Monday. The council will be awarding the project as soon as all of the figures have been checked and the necessary documents are verified.

Deer River City Administrator Mark Box presented the bid for demolition of the 13 Main building. Trout Enterprise submitted a bid of $80,125 with an alternate price if the lot will be finished in class five for $3,000. Council agreed to award the project to Trout Enterprise for the amount of $80,125.00.

Box received notice that the grant funding he submitted for a trail from downtown west to the casino has been awarded. The grant is for $1,050,000. This will be used to construct a paved trail from Highway 6 west to the Casino as well as to put streetlights along Highway 2. The trail will be 100 percent funded and the City will be responsible for 50 percent of the street lighting.

There will be a public meeting on April 22 regarding the 13 Main demolition. The City will be using State funding for this project and the meeting is a requirement of the funding.

Box reminded the council that the Board of Appeal will be on April 23 at 1:00 p.m. at city hall.
