    BASEBALL

    Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin 7, Mountain Iron-Buhl 6

    NASHWAUK— GNK improved to 5-5 on the year with a 1-run victory last Friday at home against Mountain Iron-Buhl. The Titans will travel to 2-6 International Falls on Thursday to try and push their record passed .500 for the first time this season.

    Pine River-Backus 4, Hill City-Northland 2

    HILL CITY— The Storm dropped to 1-7 on the year following a 2-run loss to Pine River-Backus at home on Friday. They return to the road to face Carlton-Wrenshall Tuesday. Results of the game were unavailable at publication.

    Minnetonka 9, Grand Rapids 1

    Grand Rapids, Totino-Grace (canceled)

    MINNETONKA— The Thunderhawks faced Minnetonka on Saturday but fell 9-1 to the Skippers on the road. The Thunderhawks collected four hits in the loss. Grand Rapids is 4-4 on the year and will be in Cloquet on Tuesday to face the 4-8 Lumberjacks. Results of the game were unavailable at publication.

    Rock Ridge 11, Deer River 6

    VIRGINIA— The Warriors fell to the Wolverines 11-6 last Wednesday in Virginia after the game was moved from Deer River due to rain. With the loss, they moved to 4-2 on the year and at 2-5 Chisholm on Tuesday. Results of the game were unavailable at publication.

    SOFTBALL

    Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin 14, Aitkin7

    COLERAINE— GNK’s bats were hot last Friday, collecting 14 hits in their 7-run home-win over Aitkin. Ava Johnson impacted the game both from the mound and the plate, getting the win for the Titans by pitching a complete game, allowing 10 hits, five earned runs, and nine strikeouts. She was 3-3 at the plate with two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored. Greenway (6-5) hosts International Falls (10-1) in Coleraine on Tuesday.     Hill City-Northland, Carlton-Wrenshall

    CARLTON— The Storm (5-3) will travel to Carlton to take on the Raptors (6-5) Tuesday. Results of the game were unavailable at publication.

    Grand Rapids 7, Cherry 0

    CHERRY— The Thunderhawks dominated Cherry on the road last Friday, once again behind Grand Rapids’ ace Addie Linder on the mound. Linder secured the win by pitching a complete game, throwing seven scoreless innings while striking out nine. Linder and Rose Ruzynski each had two hits, and Adrienne Venditto scored twice in their 7-0 victory over Cherry. 4-5 Grand Rapids will host 12-1 Hibbing on Tuesday.     Crosby-Ironton 8, Deer River 6

    Deer River, Chisholm

    The Warriors remained winless following their loss to Crosby-Ironton, falling to the Rangers 8-6 on the road. Deer River was back on the diamond Monday in Chisholm. Scoring data was not available prior to publication.

    Deer River/Northland

    The War Eagles were on the track competing last Friday in Crosby-Ironton. Despite the weather, head coach Kole Schultz said there were a lot of personal bests and top-8 finishes at the event on social media. The results included: Dylan Schwarz - 1st in the 200 and 400; Hunter Applebee - 6th in the 800 and 1600; Tatum Morrison - 7th in the 200; Nora Wake - 5th in the 400; Ashlyn Schwarz - 7th in the 400; Autumn Stangler - 8th in the 800; Alexia Lathrop - 4th in the 1600; Faith Hawkins - 8th in the 1600, 6th in the 3200; Caitlynn Hemphill - 6th in the 100H, 5th in the 300H; Ari Schjenken - 7th in the Shot Put and Discus. Deer River-Northland is scheduled to compete in their True Team meet Tuesday, in Crosby-Ironton. Results of the meet were unavailable at publication.

    Grand Rapids

    The Old River Invite was canceled due to weather last Thursday. This week the Thunderhawks will have their Section 7AA True Team meet Tuesday, in Hibbing. Results of the meet were unavailable at publication.

    The Huskies will compete in the Mesabi East Invite on Tuesday, at Mesabi East. Results of the meet were unavailable at publication.

    BOYS LACROSSE

    Grand Rapids-Greenway 6, Superior (Wisc.) 1

    SUPERIOR— The Thunderhawks celebrated their first victory of the season last Friday with a road-win over Superior, 6-1. They will host Brainerd at home Wednesday, in search of their second win.

    BOYS GOLF

    Grand Rapids

    The first day of the Northern Invite held at the Quarry at Giants Ridge was on Friday, May 3, with 16 schools participating. Scores for Rapids included Colton Stupar (82), Drew Stanley (86), Will Shermoen (87), Marco Rolle (88), Carter Casey (93), and Owen Simons (117). The Rapids team was in 6th place, 17 shots behind leader Duluth East. Low scores were 77 by Kyle Peterson and Garrett Olek of Duluth East and Andrew Slatten of Hibbing. Rapids had a better day on day two and finished tied for third place of 15 teams for the full two day tournament. Cloquet was first with a two day total of 646 with Duluth East second at 658 and Rapids and Hibbing at 666. Scores Saturday for Rapids were Colton Stupar shot 75, which was the second lowest of day two and tied for third after both days. Drew Stanley (82), Carter Casey and Marco Rolle each with 84, Will Shermoen (86) and Owen Simons (93). Overall medalist was Kyle Peterson of Duluth East with 77 and 73. Caiden Carpenter of Greenway shot 79 and 80 for sixth lowest total of 90 golfers.

    The Thunderhawks participated in the Bemidji Invite on Monday, tying for sixth place out of 13 competing schools. Grand Rapids finished with a 326 while host, Bemidji, got the win at home, with a 306. Results from the Bemidji Invite included Colton Stupar (76), Zach Roy and Carter Casey (83), Marco Rolle (84), Drew Stanley (88), and Will Shermoen (95). The second round of the Lake Superior Conference meet takes place at Pokegama, Wednesday morning.

    The Vikings have won eight in a row and have outscored their opponents 128-35 during the streak. Hibbing Community College got their taste of Itasca’s offense in two games on Friday, getting outscored 34-8 in two losses to Itasca.

    Gage Lund got his fourth win of the season from the mound after pitching five innings and allowing three earned runs while striking out six Cardinals.

    The Vikings jumped out to a 7-0 start after the first inning, tied off by a three run home run by Kollin Bonneville who had two hits and five RBI in the game. Carter Kalin went 4-4 with five RBI while Layton Rivas and Garron Opsahl both had multi-hit games.

    In the follow-up, Kyle Rutherford earned his fourth victory from the mound this year with a six inning, 1-run, 3 strikeout performance in MNC-Itasca’s 26th win of the season.

    The top four batters in the Vikings’ order get multiple hits in the second game, led by leadoff hitter Layton Rivas with three hits and three runs scored. Brett Lucko (2), Kole Paulsen (3), and Carter Kalin all had multiple hits behind him.

    MNC-Itasca finished their regular season with two away games at Hibbing to complete the four-game series, splitting their away series 1-1 with the Cardinals. Scoring data was not available for the final two games.

    Fishing

    Ethan Fothergill made the news last week when he finished in 25th place out of 195 anglers at the St. Croix Bassmaster Open on Logan Martin Lake in Lincoln, AL on May 2-4. He recorded a total catch weight of 25 - 5 and secured a $4,340 check for finishing in 25th.
