    SOFTBALL

    Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin 4, Esko 0

    Proctor 7, Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin 1

    GNK shutout Esko on Thursday in the Section 7AA softball tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals against Proctor, who beat the Titans 7-1. GNK ace Ava Johnson got the win for the Titans, pitching a complete game and striking out eight while allowing zero earned. Makenna Sobtzak went 2-3 with an RBI triple to lead the offense.

    Johnson pitched in the second game but could not get ahead of the Rails offense who had 12 hits over GNK in the Titans’ 7-1 loss. Johnson pitched six innings and allowed seven runs while striking out three. GNK will face Esko May 28, as they continue to push through the Section 7AA bracket.

    Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale 14, Hill City-Northland 4

    Hill City-Northland 9, Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale 2

    The Storm dropped their opening game of their Section 5A tournament 14-4 to Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale on Wednesday before winning both of their games Thursday to stay alive.

    The Storm took down Nevis 6-5 before getting their shot at redemption against B-H-V, taking down the bears 9-2 to advance to play Mille Lacs on May 28.

    Cloquet 7, Grand Rapids 4

    Grand Rapids 5, Duluth Denfeld 1

    Grand Rapids 8, Chisago Lakes 5

    CLOQUET— One tough inning was enough to swing the opening game of the Section 7AAA tournament into Cloquet’s favor. Grand Rapids put up 10 hits as a team including two doubles and two runs from Casey Cleveland but the Lumberjacks put up seven runs in the fourth inning to take the game 7-4.

    The Thunderhawks were back in action Thursday, beating Duluth Denfeld 5-1, before taking down Chisago Lakes for the second time in less than a week.

    Emma Moran’s bat was perfect against the Hunters, going 3-3 with two doubles and ace Addie Linder was dealing, throwing another complete game and striking out 10 while only allowing a single hit and run.

    The Thunderhawks had to refocus quickly as they faced off against Chisago Lakes just six days after taking down the No. 5 Class 3A in the state 8-1 on their home field. Grand Rapids had the talent and guts to do it again, this time in the section tournament, taking down the Wildcats 8-5 to advance in the bracket.

    Linder went another seven innings, allowing eight hits and five runs with seven strikeouts against Chisago. The team had 12 hits in the win, led by Linder and Claire Larson each three hits and a double to keep momentum in Grand Rapids’ favor. With the win, the Thunderhawks improved to 12-9 and will play Hibbing May 28, in Cloquet.

    TRACK AND FIELD

    MSHSL Section 7A - North Sub Section

    The Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin girls track team won the Section 7A North Section with a 141 overall score in the tournament Thursday at Mesabi East, and the GNK boys were the runners-up, scoring 108.

    Deer River-Northland took ninth in the girls tournament, and Bigfork placed 11th, while the Deer River-Northland boys took 10th and Bigfork in 11th.

    Claire Clusiau was the Long Jump winner with a leap of 16’3.25”, which was her personal best. Sydney Goss took second in the Discus throw. Kaylee Kangas was the winner of the 100m Hurdles, followed by her teammate Madison Brown who came in second with a PR run of 18.18.

    Lola Champlin and Taylor Covier each set PR in their 1-2 finish in the 1600M and Clusiau set another PR with a 28.33, second place finish in the 200M.

    Gage Roberts had another win in the 300M Hurdles for the Titans, coming in at 43.51 and John Duffey took first in the Pole Vault.

    Chase Jacobson of Bigfork was the Discus and Shot Put winner, giving the Huskies two big victories in the tournament. Dylan Schwarz had a big day for Deer River-Northland, taking first place in the 400M with a 52.43 and second in the 300M with a time of 23.98.

    Grand Rapids

    The Thunderhawks competed in the Bemidji HS Invitational Thursday for one final competition before the Section 7AA Championships start next Wednesday. The boys took third place with a team score of 69.5 and the girls finished fourth with a 54.5.

    Benjamin Harker was the winner of the Discus, with the furthest throw of the day 134 '10, with his teammate Hudson Hillman coming in fifth place with a PR throw of 113' 4. Herschel Christiansen had tied for first with a 5’8 High Jump, and Colton Johnson placed third in the Long Jump, and second in the Triple Jump.

    The girls team was led by Lily DeBay, an impressive eighth grader who was the varsity winner in both the 100m Hurdles, and 300m Hurdles, while finishing fifth in the Long Jump with a leap of 15 feet even.

    Kayla Jenkins was the Triple Jump winner with a PR jump of 31.75, and Ginger Pogorelc tied for first in the High Jump with a jump of 4 '10. Emily Thomsen and Emma Brula took second and third place in the Discus.

    BASEBALL

    Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin 14, North Woods 6

    Mesabi East 10, Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin 0

    The GNK Titans split their final two games of the regular season on the road to end at 9-9. They took down the North Woods Grizzlies 14-6 on the road, before losing to Mesabi East 10-0.

    Section seeding has yet to be determined.

    Mille Lacs 10, Hill City-Northland 0

    The Storm had the opportunity to rematch Mille Lacs in their Section 5A opener less than a week after the Raiders beat them twice, but the Raiders were too strong once again, taking down the Storm 10-0, and ending their season.

    Deer River 3, North Woods 0

    The Warriors finished their regular season 8-6 after shutting out North Woods 3-0. Section 7A seeding has not been released to this point.

    BOYS LACROSSE

    Hermantown-Proctor 11, Grand Rapids-Greenway 3

    Duluth 17, Grand Rapids-Greenway 4

    Grand Rapids-Greenway, St. Cloud

    The Thunderhawks fell to 2-10 with a road loss to Hermantown-Proctor 11-3 on Wednesday before a big loss to Duluth at Noble Hall Field on Thursday, falling 17-4 to the Wolfpack.

    The Thunderhawks are on the road Friday in St. Cloud to wrap-up the regular season, before entering the section tournament next Tuesday. Results against St. Cloud was unavailable at publication.

    GIRLS LACROSSE

    Grand Rapids-Greenway 7, Moorhead 6

    GRG was in Moorhead looking for their tenth win in the final game of the regular season and picked it up against the Spuds, 7-6 on Thursday. Ryleigh Sherlock led the Lightning with two goals and an assist while Barrie Bahr added goals to push GRG past Moorhead. The Thunderhawks begin their section tournament next Thursday.

    BOYS GOLF

    Deer River

    Deer River as a team ended up being Northern Pines Conference Runner-up with a team consisting of Mack Evans, Kyle Gotchie, Tyler Latvala, Ian Villeneuve, Caiden Schjenken, Connor Vickerman. Mack Evans and Kyle Gotchie were selected to the Northern Pines All-Conference second team.

    Grand Rapids

    Section 7AAA tournament will begin on May 29 at Grand National Golf Club in Hinckley.
