WINSTED, Conn. — Trapped inside a car, the adult black bear and cub thrashed about. The horn was blaring and the radio blasting. Outside the car, a second cub ran in apparent distress around the Connecticut home.

The contest, now in its second year, offers residents the opportunity to have their loyal companions compete to be named Westfield’s “Top Dog,” while at the same time promoting dog licenses in the city, as all participants must have a valid license.
Agawam 5-year-old takes a stand for kittens in need
Elizabeth Poggi knows what it means to make a difference — at age 5. Elizabeth wanted to run a lemonade stand this summer, and her parents – Rebecca and Richard Poggi – were happy to help. When Elizabeth asked if she could donate proceeds to Dakin Humane Society, her parents not only agreed, they promised to match what she made from her stand.
Daniel Manacher Prize for Young Artists Winners Announced
SANDISFIELD, Mass. — The Sandisfield Arts Center announced the winners of the 3rd Annual Daniel Manacher Prize for Young Artists. Aidan White, Mico Aldmar Mendoza, and Warwick Willow were selected by Juror Josephine Halvorson, an accomplished artist and the Chair of the MFA Program in Painting at Boston University's College of Fine Art. Each winner receives $400 in support of their art practice, as well as a group show of their work at the Sandisfield Arts Center. Their work will be featured in an Opening Reception on Sept. 15 from 4pm - 6pm. The gallery show will run through Oct. 6.

HUNTINGTON — Concertgoers enjoyed soulful country ballads and a break in the weather on July 18, as they brought their lawn chairs to listen to Easthampton singer-songwriter Greg Hall play in front of the town gazebo from 6:30 to 8 p.m., accompanied by Miguel Santiago of Worcester on harmonica.
